Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia’s ability to maximize the economic benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) depends on its readiness in talent development, digital infrastructure, and cybersecurity. The government is emphasizing investment in skilled professionals and stronger data protection to support a secure and sustainable digital ecosystem.
Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, Director General of the Digital Ecosystem at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, highlighted the importance of developing AI engineers, cybersecurity professionals, data scientists, policymakers, and educators to strengthen Indonesia’s digital capabilities.
Cybersecurity as a Foundation for AI Innovation
Speaking at the AI, Cybersecurity, and Innovation Exchange (AICX) 2026 during Bali Tech Week in Denpasar, Edwin stressed that cybersecurity must be integrated into technology development from the outset through a safety-by-design approach. This is essential to protecting users, preventing data breaches, maintaining public trust, and supporting the safe adoption of emerging technologies, including AI and quantum computing.
Edwin also emphasized that cybersecurity should go beyond responding to threats. It must serve as a strategic foundation for digital growth, helping organizations manage risks and ensure that data is transferred and used securely.
Developing Digital Talent Through Collaboration
Indonesia also needs to expand upskilling and reskilling programs to help workers adapt to changing industry demands. Investments in education and professional training are essential to preparing the workforce for the growing adoption of AI and other advanced technologies.
Edwin highlighted the importance of collaboration among government, industry, academia, and civil society. These stakeholders each play a role in establishing reliable policies, developing technological solutions, advancing research, and ensuring public accountability.
Conclusion
Indonesia aims to strengthen its position as a digital innovation hub through sustained investment in AI talent, cybersecurity, and data protection. By combining secure technology development with workforce training and cross-sector collaboration, the country can build a trusted digital ecosystem that delivers broader economic and social benefits in the AI era.
