11 hours ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - Hasanuddin University (Unhas) is preparing to launch an Artificial Intelligence (AI) study program as a strategic move to keep pace with rapid technological advancements, while strengthening its role in supporting societal needs and national development.

Unhas Rector Jamaluddin Jompa stated that this initiative is a proactive response to the increasingly fast-changing global landscape. He emphasized that the development of the AI program is intended to ensure the university remains adaptive and relevant amid continuous technological progress.

In addition to AI, Unhas is also prioritizing the development of robotics technology as part of its innovation agenda. He noted that these technological advancements are designed to deliver tangible benefits to society, particularly in key sectors such as agriculture.

Drone Development for Modern Agriculture
Unhas is advancing drone-based agricultural technology to support national food security. This innovation includes the use of drones for rice planting and various other farming activities.

Jamaluddin Jompa explained that the university is preparing for modern agriculture by adopting cutting-edge technologies while also developing its own drone systems. He highlighted that these drones are independently developed by Unhas for domestic needs, adding that some countries have shown interest in replicating the innovation, even though certain components are still sourced externally.

Supporting National Programs
These remarks were delivered following Jamaluddin Jompa’s inauguration as Rector of Unhas for the 2026–2030 term. On that occasion, Unhas reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the national Asta Cita program initiated by President Prabowo Subianto.

The program serves as a guiding framework for the university’s policies aimed at accelerating social welfare improvements. Unhas also plays an active role in addressing national challenges by collaborating with the government, industry, communities, and the education sector.

Conclusion

Hasanuddin University’s initiative to establish an AI study program alongside its in-house drone development reflects a forward-looking strategy to align higher education with technological transformation. By integrating AI, robotics, and precision agriculture, Unhas is positioning itself as a key contributor to national innovation, food security, and sustainable development, while actively supporting broader government agendas and industry needs.
