Google Introduces Enhanced Fraud Protection in Indonesia to Bolster User Safety

1 year ago | Cyber Security

Jakarta, INTI - Google has launched its latest cybersecurity feature, Enhanced Fraud Protection, to combat the growing sophistication of digital threats in Indonesia. The new safeguard is integrated into Google Play Protect, aims to shield users from potential harmful applications, particularly those downloaded from unverified sources through sideloading.

The announcement came during the 2025 Internet Safety Day event hosted by Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) in Jakarta. Putri Alam, Google Indonesia’s Director of Government Relations and Public Policy, highlighted the initiative as a milestone in the company’s commitment to enhancing cybersecurity for its Indonesian user base. The rollout is set to begin in February 2025.

Shielding Against Sideloading Risks

Sideloading, though popular for providing Android users with flexibility, often exposes devices to malware, fraud, and other cyber threats. Google’s Enhanced Fraud Protection aims to reduce these risks by automatically detecting and blocking suspicious apps before they can access sensitive data.

Putri Alam shared that the feature has already been deployed successfully in other countries, protecting over 10 million devices worldwide. It prevents malicious apps from accessing sensitive information, such as one-time passwords (OTPs) sent via SMS or user screen content, enhancing user security without compromising device functionality.

“We’re proud to extend this protection to our users in Indonesia. Cybersecurity isn’t just about advance technologies, but it’s also about empowering people. Our focus is on building long-term cyber resilience for Indonesians.” Putri said.

How Enhanced Fraud Protection Works?

Enhanced Fraud Protection integrates seamlessly with Google Play Protect, which is pre-installed on all Android devices. Key features include:

  1. Continuous Scanning: Apps are automatically scanned upon installation and periodically checked for malicious behavior.
  2. Real-Time Blocking: Harmful apps are blocked instantly if detected, preventing damage before it occurs.
  3. User Alerts: Users receive immediate notifications about suspicious apps, with options to remove them directly.
  4. Automatic Removal: In critical cases, malicious apps can be disabled or removed without user action.

Managing Google Play Protect Settings

Google Play Protect is enabled by default, but users can manage the feature by following these steps:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap the profile icon in the top right corner.
  3. Select Play Protect > Settings.
  4. Toggle the Scan apps with Play Protect option on or off.

Public-Private Collaboration with Komdigi

Google’s initiative is part of a larger collaboration with Komdigi to strengthen Indonesia’s digital infrastructure. This partnership highlights the importance of government and industry working together to address cybersecurity challenges and build resilience against emerging threats.

Putri Alam emphasized that the ultimate goal is to foster a safer digital environment in Indonesia. “Our collaboration with Komdigi is crucial in ensuring that Indonesians can confidently explore the digital world without compromising safety,” she said.

Conclusion

The introduction of Enhanced Fraud Protection is a pivotal step in Google’s efforts to create a safer digital ecosystem in Indonesia.

By addressing the vulnerabilities associated with sideloading and proactively blocking malicious apps, Google empowers users to navigate the digital world with greater confidence.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, collaboration between tech companies and governments is more critical than ever. Google’s partnership with Komdigi underscores the power of public private efforts to build a resilient cybersecurity framework for the future.

For Indonesian users, Enhanced Fraud Protection isn’t just a feature it’s a commitment to safeguarding their digital lives in an increasingly connected world.
