Jakarta, INTI - Global demand for electric vehicles (EVs) increases in June 2026. Even though sales in China and North America weakened, increased sales in Europe successfully offset them. This resulted in four consecutive months of growth for global EV sales.
Reuters reported that Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI)’s data showed that registrations of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) increased 7% year-on-year to 2 million units in June 2026. Cumulatively, global EV sales in the first half of 2026 rose 2% compared to the same period in 2025.
Europe is the Current EV Market’s Driver
Europe is the main driver of growth in the global EV market. EV registrations in the region surged 31% to around 530,000 units in June 2026, setting a record high for June sales. BMI assesses that Europe is now the main driver of growth in the global EV industry amid a slowdown in several other key markets.
Meanwhile, EV sales in China's market decreased, with registrations falling 11% to around 1 million units. Weakening domestic demand has prompted Chinese automakers to aggressively expand their market overseas.
EV sales in North America also declined 13% following the end of the EV tax credit incentive in the United States, which had previously been a driving force behind demand.
Despite facing pressure in China and North America, strong growth in Europe has maintained the positive trend in the global electric vehicle market. This development demonstrates that the transition to environmentally friendly vehicles is continuing, although the pace of growth varies by region.
Conclusion
Global electric vehicle demand grew 7% year-on-year to 2 million units in June 2026, marking the fourth consecutive month of growth. Europe was the main driver, with EV sales surging 31% to around 530,000 units. In contrast, EV registrations in China fell 11% to around 1 million units, and registrations in North America fell 13% following the expiration of the US electric vehicle tax credit incentive. Despite the weakness in these two major markets, Europe's performance maintained growth in the global EV industry.
