Eddy Soeparno Calls for Expanded Indonesia–China Partnership to Accelerate Energy Transition

21 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Deputy Speaker of Indonesia’s People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Eddy Soeparno, called for Indonesia and China to expand their partnership beyond trade and investment by strengthening cooperation in energy transition, national energy security, and the green economy.

Speaking at the Track 1.5 Indonesia–China Dialogue on Cooperation in a Changing Global Order, organized by the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), Eddy emphasized that evolving geopolitical dynamics, climate change, and global economic transformation require stronger international partnerships that deliver long-term value for Indonesia.

The forum also featured FPCI Founder Dino Patti Djalal and China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Liu Zhenmin.

“Indonesia needs strategic partners capable of accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. Cooperation with China should focus on quality investment, technology transfer, industrial development, and the creation of green jobs,” Eddy said.

He added that the growing impact of climate change, including floods, droughts, forest fires, and disruptions to agriculture, highlights the urgency of accelerating the energy transition and strengthening environmental sustainability efforts.

Advancing Renewable Energy and Energy Security

Eddy highlighted China’s experience in developing renewable energy technologies, including solar panel manufacturing, battery energy storage systems, wind turbines, and electric vehicles.

“China’s experience shows that the energy transition must be implemented realistically. Indonesia should accelerate renewable energy development while maintaining energy security, affordability, and reliable electricity supply,” he said.

He noted that President Prabowo Subianto’s initiative to develop 100 GW of solar power capacity could become a key foundation for achieving Indonesia’s long-term energy independence.

According to Eddy, the success of the program will depend on regulatory certainty, faster project procurement, transparent tariff policies, and competitive financing mechanisms capable of attracting large-scale investment.

Expanding Bilateral Green Energy Investment

Eddy said Indonesia and China have already strengthened cooperation through several strategic projects, including electric vehicle battery manufacturing, solar power development, transmission network expansion, and waste-to-energy initiatives.

He believes Indonesia possesses significant potential to emerge as one of Asia’s leading clean energy hubs, supported by abundant natural resources and growing investment opportunities.

“With consistent policies, investment certainty, and mutually beneficial strategic partnerships, including with China, Indonesia can strengthen its energy security while enhancing national economic competitiveness on the path toward Golden Indonesia 2045,” Eddy concluded.

Conclusion

Expanding Indonesia–China cooperation in clean energy and green industry is expected to accelerate Indonesia’s energy transition while strengthening national energy security and sustainable economic growth. Through quality investment, technology transfer, and renewable energy development, both countries have the opportunity to build a more resilient and low-carbon future.
