BRIN Promotes Use of Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things to Strengthen Smart Farming

Jakarta, INTI - The agricultural sector, which is a key pillar in the national economy and food security, faces various challenges, including land constraints, climate change, resource use efficiency, and the need for a new generation of farmers. 

Prof. Yanuandri Putrasari, Head of the Research Center of Smart Mechatronics (PRMC) at BRIN, noted that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies present a significant opportunity to drive the adoption of smart technologies within the agricultural sector.

"The use of AI and IoT in smart farming is crucial for developing agricultural systems that are smarter and more adaptive. Through the integration of sensors, automation, and data analytics, technology can be leveraged to enhance efficiency and improve the quality of farm management," said Yanuandri in an official statement.

Under this concept, IoT enables real-time monitoring of land, crop, and environmental conditions via distributed sensor networks.

"Meanwhile, AI can process the generated data into information and recommendations to support decision-making, such as crop yield forecasting, pest and disease detection, and the optimization of irrigation and fertilization," he explained.

The integration of AI and IoT plays a vital role in driving the transformation from conventional farming to precision agriculture as a more adaptable system to environmental dynamics and the operational needs of farming businesses.

BRIN’s Discussion of AI and IoT in Agriculture

This was discussed during a webinar on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The webinar features three speakers presenting diverse perspectives.

The first speaker, Ir. Andri Prima Nugroho, STP., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng., a lecturer and researcher at Universitas Gadjah Mada, presented a session titled "Translating Plant Physiological Insights into Smart Farming Decisions: An AI- and IoT-Enabled Precision Agriculture Approach."

The second is Prof. Dr. Hanif Fakhrurroja, a researcher at BRIN PRMC, who discussed "Technological Transformation of Growing Media through Nanobubbles, IoT, AI, and Data Analytics." The third, Dr. Muhtadan, also a researcher at BRIN PRMC, presented on "Computer Vision & Edge AI for Industrial Smart Farming in Indonesia."

These three topics offer perspectives on the use of smart technology to support decision-making, the development of growing media technology, and the application of computer vision and edge AI for smart farming needs in Indonesia.

Beyond serving as a scientific discussion on the roles and innovations of AI and IoT in smart farming, it aims to enhance understanding of the application of smart instrumentation within sensor- and automation-based agricultural systems. The webinar also provides a platform for expanding collaborative networks among academics, researchers, and practitioners in the field of smart agricultural technology.

Through this event, BRIN encourages the increased use of AI and IoT technologies in smart agriculture development while fostering opportunities for cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional collaboration. The outcomes are expected to broaden understanding of smart instrumentation research in agriculture and support the development of more adaptive and sustainable agricultural technologies.
