Jakarta, INTI - Bank Indonesia (BI) is encouraging the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize regional tax revenues by mapping potential taxable entities and comparing them with actual tax collections.
BI Governor Destry Damayanti explained that one of the AI applications being developed through the Indonesia Digital Innovation Center integrates Google Maps features with regional tax revenue data.
“AI technology can help local governments identify economic activities that could potentially become sources of tax revenue. These potential sources can then be compared with the tax revenue already collected by local governments. By comparing identified economic activities with revenue data, local governments can gain insights into potential tax revenue that has yet to be captured,” Destry said at the Indonesia Digital Economy and Finance Festival on September 25, 2026.
AI Supports Financial Sector Monitoring
Beyond helping optimize regional tax revenues, AI applications in digital finance are also being developed to strengthen transaction monitoring in the financial sector, including identifying transactions that may indicate fraud.
“Findings like these may seem simple, but they can actually have a significant impact,” Destry said.
In closing, Destry emphasized that the continued adoption of AI must be accompanied by risk mitigation measures and strong governance. She said technological development needs to go hand in hand with appropriate safeguards to maintain public trust in digital services.
“Technology and innovation need to be balanced with protection measures to mitigate potential risks and maintain trust in digital transactions,” Destry concluded.
Conclusion
Bank Indonesia is exploring AI as a tool to help local governments identify untapped regional tax potential while strengthening financial transaction monitoring. The initiative also highlights the importance of risk mitigation and strong governance to ensure responsible and trusted digital innovation.
