Jakarta, INTI - Amazon is rolling out a new feature that enables users to modify the personality of its AI assistant, Alexa+. On Wednesday, the company introduced three new personality modes, Brief, Chill, and Sweet, designed to adjust the assistant’s tone and communication style.
With the Brief mode, Alexa delivers shorter and more straightforward responses. The Chill mode gives Alexa a relaxed, easygoing tone, similar to a laid-back friend. Meanwhile, activating the Sweet mode makes Alexa sound warmer and more enthusiastic, offering encouragement and positivity, according to Amazon.
The Growing Debate Over AI Personality Design
Embedding personality traits into AI systems has proven to be a complex challenge for developers.
For certain chatbot users, highly affirming AI models, such as GPT-4o from OpenAI, have led to unhealthy emotional reliance. In some reported instances, this dynamic allegedly worsened pre-existing mental health conditions, contributing to crises and even suicides, as cited in multiple lawsuits.
Nevertheless, users continue to show strong interest in customizing how AI interacts with them, often providing detailed instructions to shape a chatbot’s personality. In response, OpenAI introduced new ChatGPT features in December that allow users to fine-tune the assistant’s base style and tone, including its warmth, enthusiasm, and emoji usage. Despite these adjustments, some users have argued that the latest model remains overly reassuring by default.
Amazon stated that its new Alexa personality styles are built around five core dimensions: expressiveness, emotional openness, formality, directness, and humor. Each mode reflects a different balance of these characteristics. For example, the Brief style is not only concise but also casual, direct, and sparing in its use of humor, the company explained.
Users can switch Alexa’s personality either by voice command through compatible devices, such as an Echo speaker, or by selecting “Personality Style” in the Device Settings section of the Alexa app.
Amazon added that these three options represent the initial phase of the rollout, with additional styles planned for the future. Currently, the feature is available only in the United States.
