SM+ and KIRA Build AI-Ready Data Center Worth IDR 4.9 Trillion: Driving Indonesia as Southeast Asia's Technology Hub

Jakarta, INTI – PT SMPlus Digital Investama (SM+), a digital infrastructure and services company backed by Sinar Mas, has partnered with Korea Investment Real Asset Management (KIRA) to build an AI-based data center named SMX01. The facility will be located in Jakarta's Central Business District, with an investment exceeding USD 300 million (approximately IDR 4.9 trillion). The project is also supported by LG Sinar Mas as a technology advisor and operator, leveraging its experience in developing over 600 MW of data center capacity in South Korea.

Operational Target in 2026

SMX01 is scheduled to commence operations in the second half of 2026. The data center is designed to meet the growing market demand for digital infrastructure in Southeast Asia. According to projections, the region's digital economy is expected to reach USD 1 trillion by 2030. With SMX01, Indonesia has the potential to become a hub for technological transformation and innovation in the region.

High Scalability and Specifications

SMX01 will feature a data hall white space spanning nearly 15,000 square meters and is designed to accommodate various needs, from enterprise businesses to global hyperscale companies. With a total capacity of up to 2,400 racks across nine data halls, SMX01 offers high flexibility and scalability. Each data hall can house up to 340 racks and can be customized for various needs, including colocation services and hyperscale operations requiring high power density.

Additionally, the data center is designed to support AI and machine learning applications, which are increasingly crucial in the technology industry.

Advanced Technological Features

SMX01 is being developed with cutting-edge technology to ensure optimal performance, efficiency, and security. Some of its key features include:

  1. Support for high-power density racks of up to 130 KW per rack, making it one of the highest-capacity data centers in Indonesia.
  2. State-of-the-art air cooling and advanced liquid cooling systems to enhance thermal efficiency.
  3. Extensive connectivity through multiple internet service providers and fiber network options across Indonesia.
  4. An initial capacity of 18 MW, scalable up to 60 MW as needed.

Commitment to Sustainability and International Standards

Beyond its technological advancements, SMX01 is designed with sustainability in mind. The data center incorporates energy-efficient designs with a low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratio. It is planned to meet Tier IV standards and is expected to obtain green building certification.

President Director & CEO of SM+, Herson Suindah, stated that with SMX01 and a network of 24 interconnected edge data centers across Indonesia, the company aims to optimize advanced technology adoption, reduce network latency, and support distributed AI workloads. This initiative is expected to accelerate the entry of global companies into Indonesia and enhance the country's digital infrastructure competitiveness.

Conclusion

The development of SMX01 marks a significant step for Indonesia in strengthening its digital ecosystem and AI technology landscape. With substantial investment, cutting-edge features, and strong support from global partners, SMX01 has the potential to become a leading data center in Southeast Asia. Its presence is expected to drive national digital economic growth while boosting Indonesia's competitiveness in the global technology industry.
