INTI- Detroit, United States As part of the series of meetings including the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministers Responsible for Trade Meeting and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) Ministerial Meeting, a bilateral meeting was held between the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of Indonesia, Airlangga Hartarto, and the Minister of International Trade of Canada, Mary Ng, on Friday morning (May 26).
Minister Mary Ng extended her congratulations to Indonesia for successfully hosting the G20 Presidency in 2022 and assuming the Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023. Furthermore, Mary Ng expressed her hope that both countries can soon conclude negotiations on the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and swiftly realize the commitment to halal cooperation for Canadian products.
In response, Minister Airlangga stated, "The completion of the Indonesia-Canada CEPA is one of the President's priorities, and we also encourage the realization of cooperation in halal certification between Indonesia and Canada." As known, Indonesia and Canada will meet again for the 5th Round of Indonesia-Canada CEPA negotiations in Ottawa, Canada, from May 29 to June 2, 2023.
It is expected that a comprehensive trade agreement and halal cooperation can enhance the economic relationship between the two countries, particularly in trade and investment. The two ministers also discussed the establishment of a task force for Indonesia-Canada economic cooperation to ensure the implementation of economic cooperation is more pragmatic and practical.
During the meeting, Minister Mary Ng also expressed Canada's interest in cooperating with Indonesia in the critical minerals sector. "We have just met with Vale Indonesia, and we see the potential for cooperation with Indonesia in terms of technology and input in the mining value chain to align with Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM)," emphasized Minister Ng. The possibility of Canada's participation in the IPEF was also discussed during the meeting.
Attending the bilateral meeting were Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang and the Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, Rosan Roeslani. ***
