CrowdStrike Update Impact: Microsoft's Steps to Restore Global IT Systems

Jakarta, INTI – On July 18, 2024, CrowdStrike, an independent cybersecurity company, released a software update that has had a significant impact on IT systems worldwide. Although this incident is not directly related to Microsoft, its effects on our technology ecosystem have been substantial. Therefore, Microsoft has taken crucial steps in collaboration with CrowdStrike and other partners to restore and support our affected customers.

Microsoft's Recovery Steps

Since the incident began, Microsoft has maintained continuous communication with customers, CrowdStrike, and external developers to gather information and accelerate solutions. We are aware of the disruption this issue has caused to businesses and individuals' daily routines. Our primary focus is to provide technical guidance and support to help customers safely restore disrupted systems. The steps taken include:

  1. Collaboration with CrowdStrike: Microsoft has worked with CrowdStrike to automate their solution development. CrowdStrike has recommended solutions to address the issue and has issued a public statement. Instructions for fixing the issue on Windows endpoints have been posted on the Windows Message Center.
  2. Deployment of Experts: Hundreds of Microsoft technicians and experts have been deployed to work directly with customers to restore services. This effort includes providing technical support and ensuring the recovery process is smooth.
  3. Collaboration with Cloud Providers: Microsoft has also collaborated with other cloud providers and stakeholders, including Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS). We have shared awareness about the impact status observed across the industry and informed ongoing discussions with CrowdStrike and customers.
  4. Documentation and Remediation Scripts: Documentation and remediation scripts have been quickly posted and can be found here. This aims to assist customers in addressing issues that may arise from the update.
  5. Status Updates via Azure Status Dashboard: We continue to inform customers about the latest status of the incident through the Azure Status Dashboard. This provides up-to-date and transparent information on recovery efforts and actions taken.

Impact and Cross-Sector Collaboration

While software updates can sometimes cause disruptions, significant incidents like the one involving CrowdStrike are rare. Currently, it is estimated that the CrowdStrike update has affected approximately 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines. Although this percentage is small, the economic and social impact is substantial, reflecting CrowdStrike's use by companies operating many critical services.

This incident highlights the interconnected nature of our technology ecosystem — from global cloud providers, software platforms, security vendors, to customers. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing safe deployment and disaster recovery mechanisms. As we have seen over the past two days, we learn, recover, and move forward most effectively when we collaborate and work together.
